Let’s be honest, summer in many industries can feel—slower. The pace relaxes and, suddenly, you’re not sprinting from meeting to meeting. If this is the case for you, take advantage of it.
At ChangeSync, we’re calling it The Summer Slowdown Advantage. It gives change-practitioners like you the breathing room to reflect, realign, and refocus before the second-half push.
Mid-year is more than a checkpoint. It’s an opportunity to pause, assess what’s working in your approach, and pivot where it’s needed. Without the pressure of end-of-the-year deadlines, you can ask deeper questions like:
Reflection gives you the opportunity to strategically gain awareness, which drives opportunities for more informed and targeted decision-making. Now’s the time to acknowledge areas of opportunity, course correct and implement new strategies before the break-neck pace of work resumes.
As the year progresses, it’s important to reflect. Are those goals still relevant? Or is it time for a reassessment?
As more information becomes available through program results, stakeholder input, or evolving business priorities, goals may naturally shift. This isn’t a setback. In fact, adjusting your strategy based on new insights is a hallmark of adaptive change leadership. It’s important to normalize re-evaluating and refining objectives to ensure they reflect current realities and true stakeholder needs.
Now’s the time to do a pulse check in with your critical stakeholders. Utilize group meetings, surveys, and one-on-one check-ins. You may be surprised with the feedback you get. Just as change isn’t the same experience for all stakeholders, summer may not be a slowdown period for everyone. Pulse checks help you avoid assumptions about workloads, timing, and availability.
Too often accomplishments get ignored. Take time to recognize what’s gone right, regardless of how big it is. Noticing the little things make people want to accomplish more. Positive reinforcement isn’t just encouraging, it’s necessary.
When teams focus solely on deadlines, heavy workloads, or what's not working, it creates a cognitive burden that can lead to burnout and disengagement. Recognizing progress and small wins helps balance that weight and reinforces the change-positive behaviors we want to see more of.
Is adoption lagging on a new system? Is there a communication disconnect somewhere? Use data to pinpoint where friction is occurring, whether through system usage analytics, employee feedback surveys, or job performance metrics. Identifying these patterns early gives you the opportunity to address issues before they escalate.
Use this time to train, coach, or simply to support your managers. Teams that feel supported and seen deliver better change results and, more importantly, they are happier.
ChangeSync's Leading Through Change Seminar equips people-leaders with the change skills needed to navigate workplace complexities with confidence and clarity, building a supportive environment. Plus, our Change Management Masterclass Certification Program provides a modern, adaptable change toolkit, empowering leaders to strategically manage change and build a resilient workforce.
Sure, things might be quieter during the summer months, but don’t confuse the slowdown with stagnation. A slower pace can be the very thing that helps you gain momentum later. For others in your organization, summer may be “business as usual.”
